object
the person or thing that has the action of the verb performed upon it or is affected by the action of the verb. In the sentence, ‘Bill ate cake’, ‘cake’ is the object of the sentence and ‘Bill’ is the subject. Some sentences, such as ‘I gave John an apple’ may contain two objects. In the example sentence, ‘apple’ can be referred to as the direct object and ‘John’ as the indirect object.
